Elementary Lead Teacher

As a Montessori Lead Teacher at The Academy at Sandwich Montessori School, you encompass all of the traits outlined in our Teacher job description, and you are ready, willing, and able to take on more responsibility for the school and the high quality experience were are building for students from birth through high school.


You hold yourself to the highest of standards and are an example to others. Our team can learn how to follow the child, create materials, and maintain a well-prepared and beautiful environment from you and your skill in communicating with families and connecting with the community is outstanding.


You help to train, support, and grow assistants and teachers you work with and serve as a mentor to colleagues. You lead book studies, are an expert at making materials, and provide professional development during staff meetings, designated professional development days, and when other opportunities arise. To this end, you are continually interested in learning and growing yourself, and you extend your professional development and learning well beyond the 40 hours that is our standard. 


Qualifications and Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Education or Environmental Education
  • Working knowledge of basic natural history/ecology concepts
  • Completed and earned training from an accredited Montessori training program, or are currently enrolled in an accredited Montessori training program, and certification is imminent
  • Minimum four years of experience teaching children within your classroom’s given age 
  • Experienced and comfortable taking children into nature
  • Strong planning, organizing, and management skills
  • Demonstrated verbal and written skills
  • Ability to provide a physically & emotionally safe environment for elementary children in both indoor and outdoor setting
  • Positive and proactive communication and interpersonal skills
  • EEC certification, if required for your age level
  • Successful candidates will need to pass a background check and remain current on First Aid/CPR certifications
  • Reference checks will be coordinated by the candidate and favorable outcomes are also a requirement for employment

  • Ensure students thrive in the classroom
  • Planning and implementing individualized curriculum
  • Develop nature-based activities that reflect the needs of the children, the standards of early learning, and our mission Implement policies and procedures
  • Design and set up indoor and outdoor classroom space
  • Prepare and organize necessary supplies and materials 
  • Work toward growing and expanding the scope of elementary offerings
  • Oversee and improve the elementary program currently offered
  • Generate weekly lesson plans that focus on students’ interests
  • Assess and evaluate the effectiveness and success of lessons and programs
  • Assure compliance with all relevant governmental rules and regulations
  • Provide regular progress reports to families
  • Participate in special events to build community
  • Be the best team player ever!
