Elementary Teacher Assistant

As a Montessori Teacher Assistant, you are dynamic, forward thinking, and are in awe of the wonder of children. As a Montessori Teacher Assistant at the Academy at Sandwich Montessori School (SMS), you are connected with our mission to help develop kinder, braver, stronger human beings and to become kinder, braver, and stronger yourself. Within our nature-focused environment, you will work with Montessori teachers to develop to support the work of implementing individualized lessons and curriculum.  You know that the seemingly small tasks related to working with children of all ages make a significant impact on their day, and the prepared learning environment, and you take on those tasks with enthusiasm and pride. You are excited about spending large portions of your day outdoors. You will develop meaningful and lasting bonds with children and families and guide them to independence as you interact as a support professional in both the indoor and outdoor setting. Ongoing Montessori and nature education training is expected and maintaining EEC or other licensing requirements is expected.  Taking part in community events and within the at-large community will be a component of the position, as well. You will grow personally and professionally and the potential for growth of A players on our team is a reality. You are positive and look for the silver-lining, know that getting better every day makes an impact on your students and co-workers, and you strive to be an example of someone who is kinder, braver, stronger every day.



Qualifications and Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent, Associates Degree or higher in Education or Environmental Education
  • Working knowledge of basic natural history/ecology concepts
  • Connection to Montessori philosophy and desire to continue to learn and grow as a Montessorian
  • Previous experience working with children
  • Experienced and comfortable taking children into nature
  • Strong planning, organizing, and management skills
  • Demonstrated verbal and written skills
  • Ability to provide a physically & emotionally safe environment for elementary children in both indoor and outdoor setting
  • Positive and proactive communication and interpersonal skills
  • EEC certification, or ability to earn certification on a fast track, if required for your age level
  • Successful candidates will need to pass a background check and remain current on First Aid/CPR certifications
  • Reference checks will be coordinated by the candidate and favorable outcomes are also a requirement for employment


Key Responsibilities

  • Support students in thriving in the classroom
  • Prepare and organize necessary supplies and materials, as guided by teacher lessons
  • Assure compliance with all relevant governmental rules and regulations
  • Participate in community events
  • Help to make and/or prepare materials
  • Ensure the environment is neat, tidy, and safe
  • Have a voice in the classroom and share your observations with classroom teacher
  • Fill in for teacher in the event of teacher absence
  • Daily Procare updates for each student
  • Provide information and content for classroom communications such as newsletters, weekly updates, etc.
  • Participate in special and events to build community and support school marketing
  • Be the best team player ever!
