Middle School Core Academic Courses & Enrichment
We offer a variety of core academic courses and enrichment classes for middle school students. Families can start with one or more core academic courses, add afternoon enrichment experiences, or create a part-time or full five-day middle school schedule. Whether your student joins us for one course or builds their school week with us, the goal is the same: a personalized, connected middle school experience built around how they learn best. Build a Middle School Experience That Fits Your Student
Middle school is a time when students are becoming more independent, discovering what interests them, and forming their own ideas about themselves and the world. Middle school doesn't have to look the same for every student. Our courses give families the flexibility to build a more personalized experience while students develop strong academic foundations through real-world problems, primary sources and authentic texts, investigation, discussion, and work that matters beyond the classroom.
Courses address Common Core and Massachusetts learning standards, and go beyond them, giving students opportunities to apply, connect, and extend what they learn.
Designed for middle school-aged students in mixed-age classes, our courses build a community where students learn with and from one another, whether they join us on campus or remotely. Parents are part of that community too, with resources, connection, and support throughout the middle school years.
Students can join for a trimester or continue throughout the year. Our mixed-age approach meets students where they are, with each trimester bringing new challenges and opportunities to go deeper, stretch their thinking, and take on increasingly sophisticated work.

Blogging & Publishing

What if your middle schooler's next writing assignment could actually be published?
Students don't write for an imaginary audience. They join the work of real bloggers, writers, editors, and publishers. Responding to actual editorial needs, pitching ideas, researching with credible and primary sources, interviewing and investigating, drafting, receiving editorial feedback, revising, fact-checking, and preparing pieces for publication.
Students explore the full range of middle school writing including narrative, informational, argument, and research in authentic contexts with a real purpose and audience. When their work is ready, student writing can become part of our real publishing work and reach a real audience.
Writing changes when someone is actually going to read it.
Finance & Investing

What if you learned investing by actually becoming an investor?
Students investigate real companies, real markets, real financial information, and real investment decisions while learning the mathematics behind money.
They might research a company and decide whether they think it's worth investing in, compare competing businesses, investigate a market crash, analyze risk and return, explore how news moves markets, or build and defend their own investment thesis.
Students use mathematics to understand compound growth, percentages, probability, statistics, interest, borrowing, inflation, risk, and the time value of money because they need those tools to make better decisions.
They can build and track their own portfolios and, with family involvement when appropriate, use what they've learned to make a small real-world investment and follow what happens over time.
Students aren't told which stock will make them rich. They learn something far more useful: how to investigate an opportunity, understand the numbers, question what they're being told, weigh risk, and make an informed decision.

Literature

Read the book. Question it. Argue about it. Write something worth saying about it.
Great literature gives middle schoolers a place to wrestle with questions they're already beginning to ask: Who am I? What do I believe? What's fair? Who gets to tell the story? When should I challenge what everyone else thinks?
Students move through continuous novel studies featuring classics, modern works, and opportunities for student choice. The novel is only the beginning. Students investigate the world surrounding it through primary sources, history, art, speeches, letters, contemporary connections, and other perspectives.
Then they do something with those ideas: discussing, debating, developing interpretations, and writing to make claims, compare perspectives, explore ideas, and support their own thinking with evidence.
Live classes become genuine literature seminars where students encounter new perspectives, defend their thinking, change their minds, and discover there isn't always one answer hiding at the back of the book.

Mathematics

How many grains of sand would it take to fill the universe? Archimedes actually tried to figure it out. Could you?
More than 2,000 years ago, Archimedes took on a seemingly impossible problem: estimating how many grains of sand could fit in the universe. His work becomes a starting point for something mathematicians have always done - use numbers to make the unimaginable understandable.
Students learn middle school mathematics through problems worth figuring out. They might investigate Archimedes' original thinking, estimate enormous and microscopic quantities, build a scale model of the solar system, test extraordinary claims with mathematics, uncover patterns in real data, or use geometry and measurement to solve a design challenge.
Along the way, students build skills in number systems, equations, proportional reasoning, functions, geometry, statistics, and more.
This isn't math followed by an application. The investigation is how students learn the math.
Astronomy & Space
JOIN THE INTEREST LISTThursdays, 10am - 11am
The universe isn't a chapter in a textbook. It's right outside.
Students track what's happening in the night sky, make real observations, investigate planets and celestial objects, work with scientific information and data, and follow missions and discoveries that are changing what we know about the universe right now.
They also step into the work of scientists who came before them, examining original observations, historical records, images, data, and primary sources while asking one of science's most important questions:
How do we know that?
A discovery announced this year can become part of what students investigate. Something visible in tonight's sky can become tomorrow's question. Mathematics, physics, history, technology, and scientific thinking come together around a universe that is still being explored.

Fall 2026 Enrichment Classes at Sandwich Montessori
Our enrichment classes give middle school students the opportunity to explore new interests, build practical skills, and learn alongside other Sandwich Montessori students.
Families are welcome to choose any enrichment courses that match their child's interests and can enroll in as many or as few as they'd like. Enrichment classes meet in the afternoon on a rotating schedule, with days determined by the school's existing enrichment calendar. Each course follows its own unique progression of skills, projects, and learning experiences across the three-year middle school sequence.
Chess
Mondays, 12:30pm - 2:30pm
Students develop pattern recognition, cause-and-effect reasoning, and strategic thinking through systematic study of chess. After each session, students write a brief reflection structured as claim, evidence, counterargument, and rebuttal, the same form used in writing and rhetoric. The trimester culminates in a structured tournament and a written analysis of one complete game.
World Languages & Cultural Exploration (Spanish)
Tuesdays, 12:30pm - 2:30pm
Students build Spanish vocabulary and conversational skills through stories, music, food, cultural experiences, and real-life communication rather than grammar drills. Throughout the course, they progress from simple conversations to reading, presenting, and interviewing Spanish-speaking community members, culminating in a cultural presentation and published profile for an authentic audience.
History of Art Through Clay
Wednesdays, 12:30pm - 2:30pm
Students develop clay techniques while exploring the history and cultures that inspire their work, creating original pieces connected to their Humanities studies. Throughout the trimester, they write artist statements, participate in critiques, and showcase their work in a public exhibition, with opportunities to learn from a working ceramic artist.
Piano & Voice
Thursdays, 12:30pm - 2:30pm
Students receive individualized instruction in piano, voice, or both while developing technique, music theory, and confidence as performers. They set personal practice goals, perform for the school community each trimester, and learn from working musicians through guest visits and community performances.
Dungeons & Dragons
Fridays, 12:30pm - 2:30pm
Students build storytelling, collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills through imaginative role-playing adventures that encourage creativity and thoughtful decision-making. Each trimester concludes with a written campaign recap, and students have opportunities to learn from guest game designers, authors, or professional storytellers.
