Summer Design Camp on Cape Cod: Where Creative Kids Learn to Stitch, Dye & Design

July 15, 2026

Stitch, Dye & Design: A Cape Cod Summer Camp Built for the Creative Kid

Picture your child spending an entire week this summer sketching out ideas in their design journal, experimenting with natural dyes, stitching by hand, and even transforming a simple thrift-store find into something completely their own. If your child is happiest creating with their hands, this is the kind of week they'll have at Stitch, Dye & Design, the perfect Summer Design Camp on Cape Cod.

With its miles of coastline, beautiful beaches, and natural landscapes, Cape Cod is the perfect setting for sailing, surfing, hiking, and countless outdoor adventures. But not every child is wired that way. Some kids would rather fill a sketchbook than throw a ball. If you're searching for an art camp for kids on Cape Cod, Stitch, Dye & Design was created for kids who collect fabric scraps, ask for art supplies on their birthday, and love making something from scratch.

Does Your Child Love to Make Things With Their Hands? Here Is What That Week Looks Like

If you're looking for a design camp for kids on Cape Cod, your child will be in their element here. Every activity has been thoughtfully designed for children who enjoy making things with their hands. Instead of rushing from one craft to the next, they'll move through the design process step by step - from experimenting with natural dyes and sketching ideas to learning hand-stitching techniques and transforming everyday materials into something uniquely their own.

Natural Dyeing With Food

The week begins with one of the camp's most memorable experiences: creating natural dyes from everyday foods like onion skins, avocado pits, blueberries, beets, and turmeric. Children prepare the dye baths, make predictions in their design journals about the colors they'll create, and then watch as plain fabric is transformed into rich, unexpected shades. It's the first glimpse into the camp's sustainable design philosophy, where nothing is wasted, and every creative decision is made with intention. Their naturally dyed fabric will then serve as the foundation for the project they create throughout the rest of the week.

The Design Process - Sketching, Choosing, and Stitching With Intention

Before children begin stitching on their own fabric, they'll learn to think like designers. They'll sketch ideas, explore different possibilities, and make thoughtful decisions about the colors, materials, and project they want to create by recording their ideas in their own design journals. As they begin learning hand-sewing and embroidery techniques, every stitch will have its own purpose. Working at their own pace, each student will refine their ideas as they go, discovering the satisfaction of creating something that reflects their imagination, creativity, and personal style.

Working With Sustainable Fabrics and Transforming a Thrift-Store Garment

One of the week's most rewarding experiences is giving a thrift-store garment a second life. The whole group selects their pieces together and then transforms them - using the embroidery and textile techniques they've learned - into something entirely new. Along the way, children begin thinking differently about the clothes they wear: where they come from, who made them, and how thoughtful design can give them a whole new purpose instead of throwing them away. It's one of the things that sets this maker camp on Cape Cod apart - by encouraging children to see themselves as designers and makers rather than simply consumers.

When the week comes to an end, each child will take home something they designed themselves and a new appreciation for the value of repairing, reusing, and creating with intention.

What Your Child Will Actually Learn in One Week

Stitch, Dye & Design is more than a sustainable design camp for kids. Every activity throughout the week is designed to teach children new skills and encourage them to begin thinking like designers. Throughout the week, they'll learn practical textile techniques, develop the habits of a designer, and gain a deeper appreciation for how creativity, sustainability, and thoughtful design come together. It's a week of hands-on learning that extends far beyond the finished project.

Real Hand Skills - Hand Sewing, Embroidery, Natural Dyeing, Upcycling

Every technique your child learns during the week is one they'll use on a real project. They'll discover how natural dyes are made from everyday foods, practice the basics of hand-sewing and embroidery stitches, and learn how to upcycle a thrift-store garment into something uniquely their own. Along the way, they'll build the confidence to work with fabric, thread, and simple textile tools while creating something that's both beautiful and functional. These aren't just craft activities - they're practical skills your child can continue using long after camp is over.

The Habits of a Designer - Patience, Intentional Choice, and Iteration

Designers don't create something beautiful on the first try - they sketch ideas, test possibilities, make changes, and refine their work over time. That's exactly how your child will learn throughout the week. As they record their ideas in their design journal, experiment with different techniques, and make thoughtful decisions about every stage of their project, they'll discover that creativity is a process rather than a race. They'll learn that slowing down, solving problems, and improving an idea step by step are just as important as the finished piece they bring home.

A New Lens on What They Wear and Why It Matters

By the end of the week, your child may look at clothing a little differently. Instead of seeing a shirt or tote bag as something to buy or wear, they'll begin to wonder where it came from, who made it, and how it was created. They'll also discover that repairing, reusing, and reimagining something old can be just as rewarding as creating something new. It's a perspective that stays with children long after camp ends, encouraging them to value what they own and create with greater intention.

How Your Creative Kid Will Be Supported by a Working Artist

One of the things that makes Stitch, Dye & Design different is who your child will be learning from. Maisie isn't leading a week of pre-planned crafts - she's a practicing artist and printmaker whose own creative work is rooted in textiles and surface design. She brings that same mindset into the studio, encouraging children to experiment, solve problems, and develop their own ideas rather than copy someone else's.

This is a program built on Montessori's principle of freedom within limits. Children are not handed a template and told to replicate it. Instead, they're given the materials, the techniques, and the time - and then encouraged to follow their own ideas. Maisie's role is to support each child in making their vision happen, not to prescribe what that vision should look like. Some children will arrive with a clear picture of what they want to create; others will discover it through experimentation. Either way, Maisie is there to guide the process and help each child bring their idea to life.

With a small cohort of just 12 children, there's time for individual guidance at every stage of the creative process. Some children may need extra help threading a needle, while others are ready to tackle a more ambitious design. Throughout the week, each child documents their ideas, sketches, experiments, and reflections in a design journal that grows alongside their project.

Older and more experienced students naturally take on a mentoring role, sharing what they've learned, inspiring younger students with their ideas, and modeling the kind of creative confidence that comes from having done this before. It's one of the most beautiful things to watch unfold over the course of a week.

No Experience? No Problem.

You don't need to know how to sew. You don't need to have ever held an embroidery needle. Stitch, Dye & Design is designed to welcome children at every level - from complete beginners who have never stitched a single thing to kids who already have a sketchbook full of design ideas waiting to become real.

What matters most is the desire to make something. Maisie and the supportive, small-group environment will take care of the rest.

The Three Project Choices Your Child Will Pick From

Unlike many Cape Cod summer art and design camps, each child approaches creativity a little differently, so they will each have the opportunity to choose the project that excites them most.

After experimenting with natural dyes, exploring ideas in their design journals, and learning foundational textile techniques, each child will select one of three projects to complete over the course of the week. Whether they choose something practical or more decorative, each project will encourage creativity, thoughtful design, and plenty of opportunities to make it their own.

The Embroidered Pouch - Smaller-Scale, High Stitch Satisfaction

This choice is perfect for children who love working with small details. The embroidered pouch offers plenty of opportunities to practice hand-sewing and embroidery techniques while creating something they'll use long after camp is over. Once the fabric has been naturally dyed, children will add their own stitched designs, experimenting with color, texture, and pattern as their pouch begins to take shape. It's a wonderful choice for children who enjoy seeing their progress one stitch at a time and appreciate the satisfaction of completing a carefully crafted project.

The Natural-Dyed Tote Bag - Functional, Daily-Use, Built to Last

The natural-dyed tote bag is the perfect companion for the rest of the summer. Whether they're heading to the library, packing art supplies, or spending the day at the beach, children will have something they designed themselves to carry along. After dyeing the fabric with colors made from everyday foods, they'll personalize their tote with hand-stitched details that reflect their own ideas and creativity. Best of all, it's something they can proudly carry and tell their friends, "I designed it myself."

The Textile Wall Hanging - Open-Ended, Mixed Media, No Two Alike

For children who love experimenting and following their imagination, the textile wall hanging offers the most creative freedom. Using naturally dyed fabrics, embroidery, found materials, and mixed-media techniques, they'll create a one-of-a-kind textile art piece that reflects their ideas and artistic style. There are no templates to follow, and no two finished projects will ever look the same. Instead, each child is encouraged to explore, experiment, and create something they'll be excited to hang in their bedroom long after camp is over.

Three Ways to Join Stitch, Dye & Design This Summer

Every family plans summer a little differently, which is why Stitch, Dye & Design offers three ways to participate. Whether your child joins for a creative morning, extends their day with Brain Lab, or spends the full day immersed in making, they'll enjoy the same thoughtful instruction, small-group environment, and guidance from a working artist throughout the week.

Morning Studio - $325 (8:30 AM – 12:30 PM)

Morning Studio is the core Stitch, Dye & Design experience. Children spend each morning exploring natural dyeing, hand sewing, embroidery, and sustainable design as they work toward the project they've chosen. It's an excellent option for families looking for a dedicated creative experience that leaves afternoons free for summer adventures.

Afternoon Brain Lab - $200 (12:30 – 3:00 PM)

Brain Lab extends the learning through creative challenges, design journal activities, and opportunities to continue exploring ideas introduced during the morning. It's a great choice for families looking to enrich their child's afternoon with thoughtful, hands-on learning in a creative environment.

Full Immersion - $525 (8:30 AM – 3:00 PM)

For children who never want the creative day to end, Full Immersion combines Morning Studio and Brain Lab into one complete experience. They'll have extra time to develop their ideas, experiment with new techniques, and enjoy a full day surrounded by creativity from start to finish.
